Accepting pleasure during menstruation is still taboo. We experience a lot during menstruation and we think our partner may be disgusted with the idea of sex.
It is important to note that it does not look at all like a Hannibal scene or the Elizabeth Bathory bath. During menstruation, we produce 2 to 3 tablespoons of blood, which is an average of 35 ml. Yes, sex is messy.
Menstrual blood, which is totally healthy, can be perceived as an extra lubricant during lovemaking. Orgasms can relieve cramps by releasing the uterus, ultimately resulting in a shorter period. The climax increases blood flow and releases endorphins that make us feel good. The dopamine that is released during orgasm also relieves the pain and helps to ease the “heavy” feeling.
For me, making love during menstruation means a deeper connection with my partner, it feels more grounded and primal.
Tips for period sex
- Communication is essential. Let your partner know you have a period and tell him how you feel about making love. Ask him how he feels. If an unpleasant feeling is mentioned, what is the reason? Let him know where you want him to touch you or which areas are better to avoid.
- Make sure you remove menstrual cup or tampoon before sex. These block the vaginal passage and it can be dangerous if misused or left in the vagina for too long.
- Design a dark-colored or black towel especially for this purpose and simply put it under yourself and your partner.
- Try sex in the shower.
- You don’t need to have just vaginal sex, you can try oral sex, you can include fingers, massage, or take the opportunity to explore anal sex.
- Keep wet washcloth/napkins on hand.
- Find comfortable positions.
- Use condom. It protects you from pregnancy and STIs.
If you’re not into the idea of having sex during a period, that’s fine. Most women do not feel sexy or have severe pain. Making love during menstruation is not for everyone, and that’s OK, we all love something else. But if you think your menstruation or sex during it is disgusting, then explore why.
